Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ears or head when there is no external stimulus. Tinnitus is often perceived as a ringing or buzzing noise but can manifest differently for different people. It is important to realize that tinnitus is the result of neural activity in the brain. Although tinnitus can sometimes have a medical cause, in most cases the cause is undetermined, and the focus turns to the management of the tinnitus.

Many people experience tinnitus as an annoying occurrence, but as something, they can tolerate, without interference with daily activities. For others; however, tinnitus becomes bothersome and can start to interfere with daily function and their ability to sleep. When this happens, it is helpful to consult with a hearing care professional.

The first recommended step is to schedule a hearing assessment. Based on the results of this assessment, our clinicians can provide recommendations for strategies to manage tinnitus. These may include the use of sound generating machines and/or hearing aids, or in some cases, referral for therapies specific to tinnitus management.

It is important to realize that help is available! If you or someone you know is particularly bothered by tinnitus, contact our clinic at 613-650-1545.
